In the world of international logistics you will encounter many industry terms that you need to know in order to understand how the process works. In this case, there are two widely used terms: FCL and LCL.

What is FCL and LCL in shipping?

The terms FCL and LCL refer to the two main methods of shipping : full container FCL shipments and LCL or groupage shipments.

What does FCL mean in sea transport?

FCL, Full Container Load, means full container loading, and this means that the shipper is responsible for filling the container and also for all related shipping charges. In this case, the carrier is commited to move the container from point A to point B, having the contents of the so-called B / L or bill of lading as its sole guide, in which the goods are declared.

FCL also has lower associated costs per shipment of each unit (from 15 cubic meters in a 20-foot container) and is used when large volumes of cargo need to be shipped at a reduced cost and at an accelerated speed of process, because when it comes to a single buyer, the goods are moved directly from the port to a single recipient.

Briefly explained, an FCL or full container expedition, as the name suggests, is a shipment in which a shipper's goods travel inside a container without sharing space with other cargoes. In an FCL, the entire container is available to the importer or exporter.

What does LCL mean in sea transport?

Unlike FCL, LCL, Less than a Load container, means less than loading the entire container or less than a full container. This means that several loads, intended for different buyers, are transported in one single container.

This option is used by small or medium-sized companies that have low freight volumes or need frequent shipments and guaranteed capacity at low rates.

In this case the carrier is responsible for the container and its filling. Freight will be higher per unit of transport but, while keeping volumes low, you will have more cash flow to spend for other business needs, significantly reducing transportation costs, as ocean freight is transported in a container together with cargo from other shippers.

However, it should be considered that LCL transport may be subjected to delays and you will have no control over the other goods that will go in the same container, which may increase the risk of possible damage to your cargo during transport.

It is very important to know which method of transporting the goods is best for you, which one is fast, safe and optimizes costs according to your needs.

LCL is certainly the most flexible and least expensive way to ship small, non-urgent items between major ports around the world. It is a flexible service suitable for any needs, from a single package to a large batch, with the advantage of sending your products as soon as they are ready, instead of having to wait until you can fill an entire container by yourself.

Briefly explained, an LCL, or shipping group, is a type of transport in which goods travel inside a container along with the cargo of other shippers. Therefore, this method is also known as "common container".

Do you intend to transport goods and are not sure if you should choose an FCL or an LCL?

In order to decide which option is best for your shipment - FCL or LCL - there are four key points that you should consider as a shipper: volume, security, cost and urgency.

Whether you have a full container load (FCL), less than container load (LCL) or non-containerized cargo, at Cargo Signature we have the containers and platforms you need for sea transportation!
